| | 2008-09-15 | SEPTEMBER ART GUILD MEETING | | Bill Bowerman, "Art and Psychology: One Artist's Journey and Every Artist's Journey"
Bill Bowerman, Past President of the Lawrence Art Guild and of the Lawrence Photo Alliance, will present artwork created during the last 25 years. He will discuss various psychology topics that have been relevant to his art and to his development as an artist. These psychology topics (e.g., creativity, self-image, social comparisons, reactions to feedback, interactions with other artists and with non-artists, and promoting and selling art) are relevant to all artists.
Before beginning his journey as an artist, Bowerman taught and did research in the psychology departments of the University of Kansas and Leiden University, The Netherlands. He holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University. His interests as a psychologist have included self-concept, perception, creativity and innovation. He continues to pursue these research interests actively.
The presentation will be a blend of presenting art and discussing central psychological underpinnings of creating art and being an artist.

Libby Schmanke is a lifelong artist and a board-certifies art therapist with a private practice and studio, Art & Insight, in west Lawrence. She is on the faculty of the graduate art therapy program at Emporia State University, and during her previous career was the director of First Step House in Lawrence. She lives in the woods near Lake Perry with her husband and 13-year old daughter.
A colorful power point presentation with slides of representative artwork will enable viewers to understand the profession of art therapy and its applications. Members may then participate in a non-threatening individual art "directive." We will close with a second art exercise that will give everyone a memento of the evening. Art supplies and handouts on art therapy will be provided.
